It's always been a rumor in the far southern states since I was younger, that people would put something in the feed to keep the kids from spooking the cows and trespassing while on the hunt for the magi. I've always believed it, because some summers a field would grow them like mold on bread then the following summers they wouldn't have a one.

Now that I've learned to cultivate the little devils, I decided to leave those poor old men and their cows alone. But the point I am getting at now Is if they really do put something in the feed?

Because I would like to get my hands on some of the natural poop out there and use it for bulk but I'm scared to go through the whole process and it not work because the poop is laced with some unholy devil seman.
Anybody have any suggestion or thought on this?

Sounds familiar, reminds me of how they spray morning glory seeds with ipicac. But im not too certain a fungicide can be digested and still work. Possibly

notexactly.
farmers DO give cows antifungal medicines. to fight antifungal infections, not to stop mushrooms from growing. it is generally given as an injection or via catheter, andthe meds are usually VERY expensive.
besides, i don't know what good it'd do if they did, people are still gonna walk all over their spot looking, right?

But it always seemed like when the fields got hot and ignorant kids would get caught messing with the cows or just trashin the field while picking, the very next summer it would not produce any. And this happened with three fields I grew up around and picked at since I was young... By the way it's a bad mistake to tell ANYONE about your secret garden. And yeah after a couple summers of no mushrooms it wasn't worth the risk of going look

But besides the point, if there is something in there that stop the spores from germinating, then would you think it would die out or rearrange chemically during pasturizing or sterilizing?

i mean maybe i guess, just seems like more trouble than it would stop to me.
possibly the myc netwrok is damaged by a bunch of people repeatedly raiding a feild picking all they can, so it needs a year to recover?

They don't do anything to the feed. What they do is when they know that magic mushrooms are growing on their property they want to get rid of them for obvious security reasons. So they spay the FIELD to kill the magic mushrooms not the poop, because all they have to do is kill all remaining spores and myc. Which is quite easy and inexpensive.

This is the biggest line of crap.  Geezus.  Don't just make shit up and post it here please.  They do often put fungicides on grains, but it's to stop it from molding in damp barns during long storage periods, not to prevent mushrooms growing on the manure produced by the cows.  Besides, cows eat hay and grass in the fields, not grains.  The grains are mostly fed in the feed lots to fatten up the steers just before slaughter.

They don't spray fields or feed to stop kids from picking mushrooms.  This is an urban myth that's been around since I was a kid in the 1950s and '60s.

Fungicides don't kill live mycelium either.  If you pick all the mushrooms in a patch over a year or two, you can destroy the field.  However, the mushrooms will pop up in an adjacent or nearby field.

Ive heard of this same thing.  Especially when I lived in Florida.  I would often hear that a certain field was no good because "the farmer salted that field".  Who knows for sure though.

I live in Florida also and I've heard the salting of the fields before.  Not sure if it's true.  But I do know that some farmers give their horses salt licks. But I think that's necessary for horses.  I've also heard of farmers feeding their cows oranges, because the citric acid kills the mushrooms before they can grow, but again, not sure if this is accurate. I do know that when I was a teenager, I used to have many fields I could go to and bring home copious amounts of mushrooms, and every now and then one of those fields would "dry up".  I never knew the cause, probably too many kids picking the fields.
